This page explains how to get an estimate of the amount of yarn you would need for a Grid Designer graphghan project. It covers single-crochet, half-double crochet and corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet. Yarn estimates are generated as part of the PDF file for download. To get a yarn estimate for your graphghan project, go to Project > Download in the Grid Designer. Select download options, then the PDF option.
What is Grid Designer
The Grid Designer is a new, free, on-line tool for drawing and creating colored craft charts for your own patterns. Create your own designs for knitting, crochet graphgans, C2C crochet, latch hook, cross stitch and more, using the Grid Designer! Read more about the Grid Designer. Grid Designer does not require a login or email. It is my retirement project after 30 years as a software engineer and it is completely free to use. No download is required; it runs in your browser. To see the kinds of things you can do with Grid Designer watch the overview playlist in youtube.
Single Crochet or Half-double Crochet Graphghans
For estimating yarn needed for single-crochet or half-double crochet graphghans you will need to measure the amount of yarn you would use in 10 single-crochets or 10 half-double-crochets. Watch the video below to see how this is done:
Corner-to-Corner (C2C) Graphghans
For estimating yarn needed for C2C graphghans, you will need to measure the amount of yarn you would use in 2 blocks of C2C crochet. Watch the video below to see how this is done.
When you have your measurements:
- open your project in the Grid Designer.
- Select Project > Download from the project menu on the left side of the top toolbar.
- Select download options for how to draw your graphghan graph. See the print and download video for a description of these options.
- Click the Download button after selecting your options.
- Wait for the download data to generate, then click the PDF button.
- Check the Add Written Directions checkbox, then select SC, HDC or C2C directions.
- Under the option you select, check the “Add Yarn Yardage Estimate” checkbox.
- Enter the value you have measured and select either “inches” or “cms” for the units you measured in.
- Click the Download button.
A PDF file will be generated and downloaded from your browser. Depending upon your browser settings for downloads, you may be prompted for where to place the PDF file or it may be automatically downloaded to your browser’s download directory. To determine where your download directory is, look at the download section of your browser’s settings.
For instance, in Google Chrome on a desktop computer, click the three dots on the upper right of the chrome window. This will display a menu. Select “Settings” from the menu. A new page will be displayed with options that can be selected on the left side. Select “Downloads” to view your download settings.
Download settings are available in different ways for different browsers and different devices. Search on-line to find out how to access the settings for your particular device if you are not familiar with how to access them.
On the last page of your PDF will be a section titled Yardage Estimate with the length of each yarn used in the pattern.
If you have entered “inches” for your yarn measurement, the final value will be shown in yards. If you have entered “cms” for your yarn measurement, the final value will be shown in meters.
If you want to convert from yards or meters to ounces or grams use my yarn converter located at: http://freese-works.com/griddesigner/yarnCalculator.html.
