Create a latch hook rug from an an image! I am using one of my favorite photos to create a large latch hook rug. I digitized this photo to create a pattern for a rug that would use Herrschner’s pre-cut rug yarn. The pattern for this latch hook rug is free for non-commercial use.

I started this project to test out the Grid Designer’s image digitizer. With the digitizer you can create a pattern (for any craft) from an image/photo. I have, what I think, are some great pictures of our yard, garden and flowers and I would really like to turn a lot of them into patterns.
I show how I created the pattern from the original photo in my YouTube video on Simple Image Digitization. The Grid Designer has been updated since this video was created. The new Digitizer is shown in this video. The creation of the pattern in the older video is the same as creating the pattern using the “sharp” algorithm in the newer video.

The pattern will make a 45 x 60 inch rug, worked on 5 mesh (5 holes/inch) canvas. It will take quite a while to complete. My current progress is shown in the picture below. Currently, I have 120 rows of a 300 row rug, almost halfway there.
I could be working on this faster, but I prefer to work on it from time to time in the evenings, leaving my days free to work on the Grid Designer and other projects.
I absolutely love the way the colors are turning out in the actual rug. Herrschner’s has a good selection of greens and reds, and the light shining on the apples is coming out really well. I’m very happy with it and confident that the rest of the pattern will turn out well, even though I have not yet completed it.
NOTE: I had some difficulty working on this with the 5 mesh canvas that I purchased. I bought the Dimensions canvas from JoAnn Fabrics and I will never buy it from there again! See more on the differences between 5 mesh canvas and tools here. This is definitely a “buyer beware” area. I love the density of the rug, though, when I work it on 5 mesh canvas. Also, the picture comes out so clearly when the yarn pieces are held more tightly together.
